Diabetes Cure - The Search For A Diabetes Cure Continues

While there is nothing official on a Diabetes cure, for either type 1 or 2, research is being conducted and it seems that we may be getting closer and closer each day. However, a cure will not solve the problem; as the problem is not a lack of a cure, but a growing number of cases continuing to present themselves. The best course of action is to work toward the prevention of diabetes in new cases, while also focusing on a diabetes cure for those who already have the condition.

Possible cures for type 1 include pancreas transplants, transplantation of the insulin producing cells, artificial pancreas generation, and genetic mutations. Genetic mutations would involve injecting an insulin production gene into cells that normally reject the insulin, and then placing the cells into a patient with type 1 diabetes.

All of these potential cures sound wonderful, but they are still enduring many roadblocks. Issues these potential cures face are preventing immune rejections, getting the correct number of cells, keeping those cells alive, and many others. However, with continued research strides toward a cure are being made faster than we realize.

Now a diabetes cure for type 2 may be a little simpler. It seems that weight loss is the best “cure”. For obese patients with diabetes, undergoing a major weight loss surgery to reduce the size of the stomach and overall amount of body fat seems to reserve diabetes, in essence providing a cure for the condition. However, many people with diabetes probably do not qualify for this sort of surgery, and those who do may not have the financial means required to go through with it. The more surprising factor is that the rerouting of the intestine that happens with a gastric bypass surgery seems to have an effect on the way the pancreas secretes its hormones, thus impacting diabetes before the weight loss even begins to occur.

A continued search for a diabetes cure for both types of the condition is very important, as insulin may not be the best course of treatment. We can see in type 2 diabetics, insulin resistance is possible, so providing injections to people with type 1 may eventually cause them to develop the same resistance we already see with type 2. Someday diabetes will not be the global problem we see it as right now, but for now all we can do is work hard to closely treat and monitor the condition, while supporting research efforts however we can.
